The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels will be looking back on its past and forward to the future as it celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.
The museum recently unveiled a “Celebrating 60 Years of CBMM” logo, as well as a slate of programs meant to celebrate this milestone.
It first opened in 1965 and was operated by the Historical Society of Talbot County. CBMM managed to save many of the landmarks on its campus from demolition when it opened, such as the Hooper Strait Lighthouse, which still stands proudly to this day.
Now, the museum serves not only as an educational center, but a working shipyard and an event venue. It’s also the only museum in the country dedicated to Chesapeake Bay’s maritime history and environment.
Throughout the year, CBMM will be releasing short documentary videos about its history and current operations. The first chapter, available on its YouTube channel, explores how CBMM curators maintain its collection of over 90,000 items.
“We are proud to celebrate 60 years with everyone who has helped make this milestone possible,” CBMM’s President & CEO Kristen Greenaway says in a news release. “With the help of our community, we are excited to use this occasion to spotlight the ways that we have fulfilled our mission through the years and continue to share the Chesapeake story with new audiences.”
